About Lanzarote
Lanzarote is the most easterly of the seven major Canary Islands and lies in the Atlantic Ocean only some 100 km (60 miles) from the coast of Africa and 1,000 km from the Iberian Peninsula.
Lanzarote, including the small islands of La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este y del Oeste, covers 900 km² running 60 km north to south and only 20 km at its widest point.
Lanzarote is made up of seven municipalities: Arrecife (the capital), Teguise, Haría, San Bartolomé, Tías, Tinajo and Yaiza, with an official population of nearly 100,000 inhabitants, mostly residing in the south-central part of the island.

The island was named after a Genoese navigator called Lancelotto Malocello who arrived on the island during the second half of the XIV century opening the way to successive expeditions of French, British and Spanish sailors and merchants. Previously the isles were known as the Fortunate Islands.
Amongst the most outstanding attractions are the Art, Culture and Tourist Centres run under the auspices of the Insular Council. The world famous artist César Manrique's sensitive response to Lanzarote´s unique geography and people was instrumental in creating a pervasive artistic identity throughout the island.
Great care has been taken in preserving its historical and artistic heritage, its monuments and characteristic houses, local festivals and customs... in short, the full expression of its culture and folklore.
Lanzarote is of volcanic origin and literally covered in lava.
The National Park of Timanfaya is a volcanic field where visitors can appreciate a great variety of geological phenomena as well as a large biological mix of some 180 different plant species. In this impressive habitat where human presence has been practically nil, the park serves as an authentic laboratory for biological research.
Timanfaya is one of the best examples of a volcanic habitat sparsely vegetated and inhabited by rare species that feed upon organic matter carried by the wind. This region was devastated by intermittent volcanic eruptions over a six year period, 1730-1736, and again during the XIX century, mainly in 1824.

Puerto Del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen: 15 minutes drive from Arrecife. The largest and most vibrant resort on the island, Puerto del Carmen offers an enormous variety of restaurants, bars, shops, supermarkets, discos and stylish souvenir shops along the 3kms vast stretch of dark sand beach. The six kilometre-long beaches of golden sands on shores of the Atlantic in Puerto del Carmen are undoubtably the magnet which draw so many holidaymakers to the resort every year.
Although the waters are considered among the most tranquil of the Archipielago and can be enjoyed by swimmers and other water sport enthusiasts certain parts of the coast attract sufficient wind for the practise of windsurfing. The beaches and seas of Puerto del CArmen fly the Blue Flag of the EEC awarded for purity and lack of contamination.
The landscaped promenade with beautiful walkways and passages surrounded by palm trees and sub-tropical shrubs providesa wonderful setting for a quiet stroll or to enjoy a breath-takindg sunset watching the sun disappear behind a chain of volcanoes a little further down the coast.
